"NIGHTINGALE"

Jimmy the Bartender
Q: I think my buddy has a drinking problem. We go out together, though. So I'm wondering how I raise my concerns without sounding like a complete hypocrite?

A: Take it from a guy who's had to deny more than a few desperate men their alcoholic ambrosia: It's never easy to tell a guy he needs help. But this isn't about your looking like a hypocrite; it's about your having the BBs not to stand idle while he kills himself or someone else. Yes, there's going to be a confrontation. Yes, he's going to try to turn this around on you. Yes, you have to do it. So strap on a set and do it.

Chicago's Weekend Shooting Tally: 10 Dead, 44 Injured
COMMENT
Back when the Afrikaners were looking into how they could formalize Apartheid, they studied Chicago as a model representative of institutionalized racism.

Look at a public transit map of Chicago and the issue is right there in (pardon the pun) black & white. The trains and buses run primarily in the white areas, while huge swaths of the city that have sparse or non-existant transit options are black.

You see, racist public policy need not be violently oppressive (although it often is), it need only be profoundly neglectful. And that my friends, is Chicago's attitude towards it's black residents, 100%

"This is Casey Kasem counting down your Top 11 oil disasters.

Coming in at #11 a treat from the Great White North: The Odyssey Oil Spill of 1988 spilling 40 million gallons 700 nautical miles off the cost of Nova Scotia.

At #10 a spicy Italian meatball from 1991 when 45 million gallons were spilled when a tanker exploded and sank off the coast of Italy and continued leaking it's oil into the ocean for years later.

Coming to you at #9 a rumble off the coast of some jungle in Angola, in 1991 more than 51 million gallons. The tanker exploded, and the exact quantity of spill is unknown.

Oui Oui Oui, that's right at #8 the 1978, 69 million gallon classic about a young tanker's rudder that was broken in a severe storm, where despite several ships responding to its distress call, the ship ran aground and broke in two. It's entire payload was dumped into the English Channel off the coast of France.

At #7, another hit from South Africa in 1983, when 79 million gallons were spilled when a tanker caught fire and was abandoned before sinking 25 miles off the coast of Saldanha Bay.

At #6 in the Persian Gulf way back in 1983, 80 million gallons flowed out when a tanker collided with a drilling platform which, eventually, collapsed into the sea. The well continued to spill oil into the ocean for seven months before it was repaired.

At #5 From out Comrades in Mother Russia back in 1994 when 84 million gallons gushed forth from a broken pipeline in Russia, which leaked for eight months before it was noticed and repaired.

At #4 from 1979 those terrible twins Trinidad and Tobago where 90 million
During a tropical storm off the coast , a Greek oil tanker collided with another ship, and lost nearly its entire cargo.

Coming in at #3 making a run for border a hot tamale of a spill from Mexico in 1980. An accident in an oil well caused an explosion which then caused the well to collapse. The well remained open, spilling 30,000 gallons a day into the ocean for a full year for a total of 100 million gallons.

Coming in at #2 a true American tale It took place 100 years ago and was much bigger than the current BP spill [though it still needs to be totally played out.] It is known as the "The Lakeview Gusher" and began in 1910 when an oil line in California failed and exploded releasing a geyser of 90-100,000 barrels of oil a day and lasted for a year. releasing an estimated total of 378 million gallons.

And your #1 oil spill of all time.
Kuwait, during the 1991 Desert Storm Conflict, that Sad man Saddam the Iraqi Despot ordered his forces to open the valves of several oil tankers in order to slow the invasion of American troops. The oil slick was four inches thick and covered 4000 square miles of ocean. for a total of 520 Million Gallon, making it the #1 Oil Spill of all time."

"I love young love.

I was in love when I was 16 - he was 17. We kissed and humped the year away and when summer came, I missed his call (he was going to visit his dad for the summer) and my mom, thinking that I had seen the message, threw it out.

So we ended up breaking up.

Flash forward 3 years and we run into each other again. We decide that since we had never slept together, that it was a perfect time to do so. So we got a motel room, got naked and couldn't stop laughing. Fun but awkward.

Flash forward another 15 years and I run into a friend of his on the bus to work. He takes my number, gives it to my ex and voila! Yet another call and it turns out that we worked across the street from each other for years.

We spent 4 weeks meeting at lunch and having drinks and once again humping and kissing.

The night we were finally going to make love for the very first time - his dad died.

So yeah - we never did the deed.

Its been 11 years since I've seen him. He's married now with a kid. Almost immediately after our "lost moment", I met my current BF who I love dearly (11years and counting!!) but to this day, nobody ever made me tingle they way that guy did."

Ask the Pilot: book excerpt
"Once a pilot always a pilot. That's my rejoinder -- and perhaps, on some level, a pitiful one -- when hit with the question: 'Oh, so you're not actually flying anymore?' Or even more hurtful: 'Oh, so you're a former pilot?' I get that a lot, couched in a tone of suspicion that sends me racing to defend my credibility."
